Flag of the Crimean Tatars. History reference

The flag of the Crimean Tatars, which is blue cloth with a yellow emblem (tamga, Tarak-tamga Crimean tat. Taraqtamğa(emblem)) in the upper left corner.

For the first time, the flag was adopted by the Kurultay (national convention) of the Crimean Tatars in 1917, after the February revolution in Russia.

On June 30, 1991, re-convened by the Kurultai, this flag was re-adopted as a national flag:

Resolution of the Kurultay of the Crimean Tatar people “On the national flag and the national anthem of the Crimean Tatar people.”

Being the successor of the Kurultay in 1917 and continuing the traditions of the national statehood of the Crimean Tatar people, Kurultay resolves:

1. To consider the national flag of the Crimean Tatar people a rectangular blue cloth with the image in its upper corner near the shaft of the golden tamga. The ratio of the width of the flag to its length – 1: 2.

2. The anthem of the Crimean Tatar people to consider as an essay by Noman Chelebidzhihan “Ant etkenmen.”

3. To charge the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people to develop and approve the procedure for using the national flag and hymn.

Since 2010, June 26 is celebrated by the Crimean Tatars as the day of the Crimean Tatar flag.

July 22, 2012 Kurultay of the Crimean Tatar people of the V convocation decided to entrust the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people to develop and submit for approval by the Kurultay of the Crimean Tatar people of the VI convocation the Regulation “On the national flag of the Crimean Tatar people”, in which to settle the issue of description, official use and legal protection of the national flag of the Crimean Tatar people.

The blue colour is the traditional colour of the Turkic peoples, symbolising the clear sky and freedom. (Compare with the flag of Kazakhstan). Historically, it was one of the symbols of Tengriism. This colour was used on the banners of the Crimean Khanate.

Tarak-tamga (Template: lang-crh) – the emblem depicted on the flag is a generic sign of the ruling Geraev dynasty in Crimea. The first to use this symbol was the founder of the Crimean Khanate.   Haji I Gerai, since this sign is a symbol of Khan’s power.
