Two streets of Kyiv will be renamed in honour of the famous Crimean Tatar figures – the writer and enlightener Ismail Gasprinsky and Twice Hero of the Soviet Union Amet-Khan Sultan.
The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people (prohibited in the territory of Crimea by a court decision) and the Crimean House took the initiative. Deputies supported this proposal at the next meeting of the standing committee of the Kyiv City Council on culture, tourism and information policy.
So, according to the information of the program director of the Crimean House Alim Aliyev, in honour of Ismail Gasprinsky Sormovskaya street will be renamed, and in honour of Amet-Khan Sultan – the street named after NKVD employee Konstantin Zaslonov will also be renamed.
Both streets are in the Darnytsia district of Kyiv, not far from the Darnytsia railway station. The Sormovskaya street and street of Konstantin Zaslonov cross Simferopol, Yalta and Sevastopol streets.
“Renaming the streets in honour of the famous Crimean Tatar figures is not just the country’s policy regarding getting rid of the burden of the Soviet past, it is an element of including the Crimean Tatar cultural and historical heritage into the national one. This is how the Ukrainian political nation is built, of which the Crimean Tatars are a genuine part. Therefore, I am sure that the deputies of Kyiv City Council will vote for this important decision, ”– Alim Aliyev wrote on Facebook.
